River Cruise Ship Successfully Refloated After Running Aground on the Danube River
A river cruise ship, carrying over 200 people, ran aground on the Danube River near Garla Mare, Romania, close to the intersection of Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia. The grounding occurred due to unusually low water levels in the area, as reported by Digi 24 TV.
According to CruiseMapper’s satellite AIS tracking, the vessel involved was likely the longship Viking Lif. At the time of the incident, it was en route from Turnu Magurele to Vienna, carrying 180 passengers and 53 crew members when it became stranded on a sandbank. The river’s flow for that region had dropped to about 2,600 cubic meters per second, substantially below the seasonal average of around 3,800 cubic meters, which revealed sandbars and limited navigable depth.
Local authorities swiftly responded by keeping in contact with the crew and ensuring the passengers were supplied with necessities. Provisions were delivered to sustain everyone aboard for several days due to the uncertainty of when the vessel could be refloated.
Fortunately, conditions improved the following morning as the river’s flow increased, allowing the ship to float free and continue its journey upstream toward Austria. No injuries or significant damage were reported, and navigation on that section of the Danube has since resumed normal operations.
