Tragic Discovery: Coral Adventurer Passenger Found Dead on Lizard Island, Australia

Australian authorities have initiated an investigation into the unfortunate death of an 80-year-old female passenger found on Lizard Island, following a shore excursion from the Coral Adventurer. The incident occurred on October 25th when the vessel was docked at the remote island, located about 320 km north of Cairns, Queensland.

The passenger had participated in a guided hike to Cook’s Look, the highest point on the island. During the hike, she informed the group she could not continue and decided to return to the ship alone. Witnesses later noticed Coral Adventurer leaving the island, unaware that she had not reboarded. After her absence was realized, a search was conducted on board that evening, but her body was discovered the next day.

This incident has raised alarms regarding passenger supervision and tracking protocols during land activities. Dr. Adam Smith, a marine scientist from James Cook University, cautioned that while maritime operations typically ensure passenger counts and oversight, land excursions often depend on individual compliance with safety guidelines. He suggested implementing structured measures like buddy systems and formal checklists to better manage risks.

According to Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) regulations, passenger vessels must have systems in place to account for every passenger at all times. An AMSA representative confirmed that they are investigating if these procedures were adhered to and have promised to take action if any violations are found.

Gareth Phillips, CEO of the Association of Marine Park Tourism Operators, noted that operators are legally required to maintain strict safety management systems for both onshore and in-water excursions. He vouched for Coral Expeditions, highlighting its longstanding commitment to safety.

Coral Adventurer, among three expedition ships operated by Coral Expeditions, was in the midst of a 60-day journey around Australia at the time of the incident. CEO Mark Fifield commented on the ongoing inquiries and expressed the company’s full cooperation with investigators while also offering support to the deceased passenger’s family.

AMSA plans to board Coral Adventurer and conduct further inquiries upon its arrival in Darwin.
