River Cruise Ship Successfully Refloated After Grounding on the Danube

A river cruise ship carrying over 200 passengers temporarily ran aground on the Danube River near Garla Mare, Romania, close to the confluence of the borders of Romania, Bulgaria, and Serbia. The grounding occurred during a period of unusually low water levels, as reported by Digi 24 TV.

According to satellite AIS tracking from CruiseMapper, the vessel likely involved was the Viking Lif. At the time of the incident, the ship was on its way from Turnu Magurele to Vienna, with 180 passengers and 53 crew members aboard. It became stranded on a sandbank due to the river’s flow dropping to approximately 2,600 m³ per second, significantly below the seasonal average of around 3,800 m³, which exposed sandbars and reduced navigable depth.

Local authorities quickly responded, keeping in touch with the crew and ensuring that the passengers received adequate supplies during the unexpected grounding. Provisions were prepared to last several days, should it have taken longer to resolve the situation.

Fortunately, conditions improved by the following morning when the river’s flow increased, enabling the ship to refloat and proceed towards Austria without any injuries or significant damage reported. Navigation in the affected section of the Danube has since returned to normal.
