MSC Meraviglia Makes Waves: Connects to Shore Power in New York City

MSC Cruises has celebrated a significant advance in its sustainability initiatives by successfully connecting the MSC Meraviglia to shore power at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in New York City. This milestone was marked after the completion of commissioning tests on October 26, 2025, allowing the ship to draw electricity from the local grid, thereby ensuring all onboard systems could operate without the need for its engines. This shift represents a meaningful reduction in emissions during the vessel’s time at port.

This achievement reflects MSC Cruises’ ongoing collaboration with port authorities and city officials, aiming to promote clean-energy solutions at U.S. ports. The cruise line has reaffirmed its commitment to using shore power wherever available, contributing to improvements in air quality and reductions in carbon emissions.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation pointed out that the upgraded shore power infrastructure at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is part of a larger effort to electrify the city’s waterfront. Recent upgrades, including those at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal and a future master plan for the Manhattan Cruise Terminal, strive to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of the cruise industry in the area.

Since 2017, MSC Cruises has outfitted all newly built ships with shore power capabilities and is retrofitting older vessels across its fleet. Currently, 16 out of 23 ships in the fleet can connect to local power grids, with this number expected to rise to 17 by year-end. Shore power plug-ins have also recently occurred in La Spezia and Le Havre.

The cruise line’s luxury brand, Explora Journeys, likewise made its debut with shore power technology in Europe when EXPLORA II successfully connected at the same port a day after MSC Meraviglia’s operation.

MSC first implemented shore power in the U.S. in April 2025 with the MSC World America at PortMiami. Throughout 2024, the company executed 142 shore power connections across 13 ports—an impressive increase compared to the previous year.
