MS Richard With: Hurtigruten’s First Climate-Neutral Norwegian Coastal Voyage Sets Sail
Hurtigruten has embarked on a new phase of sustainable travel with the launch of the MS Richard With for its first climate-neutral voyage along the Norwegian coast. The ship set sail from Bergen on October 29, 2025, on a journey covering 5,000 kilometers to Kirkenes and back. This initiative not only serves travelers but also local communities, highlighting the connection between tourism and remote locales.
The MS Richard With operates entirely on advanced biofuel, HVO100, a renewable biodiesel derived from waste resources such as used cooking oil. This fuel is claimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels. Hurtigruten aims for significant emission reductions without the need to invest in new ships or extensive infrastructure, having already invested approximately EUR 100 million into environmental retrofits over the last four years. These improvements include hybrid battery systems, upgraded engines, and advanced sewage treatment units, which have collectively enhanced energy efficiency and diminished nitrogen oxide emissions by over 80%.
The biofuel for this voyage is sourced from St1’s UK-based subsidiary and refined in Gothenburg, adhering to the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification standards. Hurtigruten’s efforts showcase the practicalities of circular energy solutions in commercial shipping while supporting the transition to biofuels as part of a broader strategy for a low-carbon maritime future, particularly as zero-emission technologies for larger vessels continue to be developed.
