Giant Wave Incident Strikes Tenerife Port: Cruise Ship Passengers in Danger

A severe maritime incident occurred on November 8, 2025, in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, when a massive wave crashed over the seafront promenade, leading to one death and several injuries.

Emergency services reported that a group of people, including numerous cruise ship tourists, had gathered along the pier to watch the rough sea when the wave hit unexpectedly, sweeping some individuals into the water. Local maritime safety official Sebastián Quintana described the event as one of the most serious coastal accidents in recent history, noting that the affected individuals were standing on the promenade, not in the water, when the swell struck. Despite a coastal red alert, the strength of the wave caught observers by surprise.

Rescue teams quickly responded and managed to recover all individuals from the water. A total of ten people were affected, with three suffering serious injuries. Authorities confirmed that among the victims were foreign tourists who had arrived earlier that day on a cruise ship docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for a short visit.

The deceased, identified as a Dutch national, was brought from the water in cardiac arrest and did not survive despite the immediate efforts of the emergency responders.

During this time, the Canary Islands were under a severe weather alert, with wave heights reaching up to 15 feet in certain areas. In light of this tragedy, officials have launched an investigation and reiterated advisories for residents and tourists to stay away from coastal walkways during adverse marine conditions.

On that day, four cruise vessels—Silver Dawn, Azura, Mein Schiff 3, and Sky Princess—were reported to be docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
