Cruise Ship Passengers Experience Dramatic Giant Wave Incident at Tenerife Port
On November 8, 2025, a tragic maritime incident unfolded at Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, when a powerful wave surged over the promenade, leading to one death and multiple injuries. A group of visitors, including cruise ship tourists, had gathered along the pier to watch the turbulent sea when the wave unexpectedly struck, sweeping some individuals into the water.
Local maritime safety official Sebastián Quintana described the incident as one of the most severe coastal accidents in recent times, noting that the victims had been on the promenade, not in the water, when the swell hit. Despite a coastal red alert, the force of the surge took the onlookers by surprise.
Rescue teams acted quickly, managing to recover all individuals from the water. Ten people were affected, with three suffering serious injuries. Among the victims were foreign tourists who had arrived earlier in the day on a cruise ship docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The deceased was identified as a Dutch national, found in cardiac arrest and could not be revived despite immediate medical assistance.
At the time, the Canary Islands were under a severe weather alert, with reported wave heights reaching up to 15 feet. In light of the incident, officials have opened an investigation and issued warnings to locals and travelers to avoid coastal areas during adverse weather conditions.
On the day of the event, four cruise vessels were docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, including Silver Dawn, Azura, Mein Schiff 3, and Sky Princess.
