October Cruise Plans Disrupted: Hurricane Melissa Hits the Dominican Republic

Heavy rains from Hurricane Melissa in late October led to the alteration or cancellation of numerous cruise itineraries to the Dominican Republic, with an estimated 25,000 passengers affected, as reported by the Ministry of Tourism. The hurricane, which emerged on October 21 and dissipated on October 31 after reaching Category 5 strength, had a significant impact on maritime activities, causing reduced cruise movement at Dominican ports.

The Dominican Republic saw 98,051 cruise arrivals in October, marking a 41% decrease from the same month the previous year. Tourism Minister David Collado explained that unsafe marine conditions halted more than eleven vessels from docking. However, he stated that many of these cruises are expected to resume their itineraries in November and December.

Deputy Minister Jacqueline Mora added that despite the disruptions, the nearly 100,000 passengers who did arrive represented an 11% increase compared to October 2023 and a 51% increase over pre-pandemic figures. From January to October, cruise arrivals totaled 2,115,262 travelers, which is 8,524 more than the previous year, indicating a slight overall growth for the period.
