Keel Laid for the Second Orient Express Sailing Yacht at Chantiers de l’Atlantique: A New Era of Luxury Yachting
Chantiers de l’Atlantique has marked a significant milestone with the keel-laying ceremony for the Orient Express Olympian, the second addition to the Orient Express Sailing Yacht series and a sister ship to the Orient Express Corinthian. This event took place at their shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, kicking off the hull assembly process with the installation of the first structural block in the dry dock. This achievement comes ten months after the steel-cutting phase, with the completion of the vessel slated for spring 2027.
Measuring 220 meters, these vessels are set to become some of the largest sailing passenger ships globally and the first to implement the shipyard’s innovative SolidSail wind-assist technology. The propulsion system will feature three tilting masts with 4,500 square meters of rigid sails, aimed at significantly diminishing fuel consumption by operating solely on wind power in suitable conditions, while also incorporating LNG propulsion for hybrid operation.
The maiden yacht, Orient Express Corinthian, is expected to undergo sea trials in December to assess the performance of the SolidSail system, which is anticipated to enable speeds of up to 17 knots under sail. In conjunction with their advanced propulsion technologies, the yachts will boast eco-friendly features, including an AI marine mammal detection system to minimize collision risks, and a dynamic positioning capability to prevent anchor-induced damage to seabeds. Sailing experts are collaborating to create itineraries that capitalize on optimal wind conditions.
This initiative signifies the expansion of the Orient Express brand from its historical roots in rail travel into the realm of ultra-luxury cruising, harmonizing maritime innovation with the brand’s storied heritage.
