Mossel Bay Unveils New Cruise Reception Facility: A Gateway to South Africa’s Coastal Wonders

The Port of Mossel Bay in South Africa has officially opened a new Cruise Reception Facility, with the expedition ship SH Diana being the first to utilize the terminal. This vessel, operated by Swan Hellenic, is on a 15-day journey from Mombasa to Cape Town, carrying 167 passengers and 127 crew members. The facility’s launch is a crucial part of the Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) plan to enhance Mossel Bay’s position in the growing South African cruise industry.

Designed to improve the efficiency and safety of cruise operations, the facility addresses the challenges of handling ships at anchor. Strategically located near the quay, it allows for smooth passenger transitions from the ship to the shore, providing shelter and essential services tailored to small-ship and expedition operators. TNPA has emphasized that the layout aims to create a hassle-free experience for visitors, ensuring easy access through security and customs processes.

The center consolidates all cruise-related operations to foster better coordination among port authorities, tourism organizations, and service providers. TNPA’s Acting Chief Executive, Phyllis Difeto, remarked that the facility responds to the needs of tourism stakeholders, reinforcing Mossel Bay’s status as a vital cruise destination. She noted the project’s commitment to sustainable tourism while promoting economic growth in coastal cities.

Built to meet international standards, the terminal serves as the headquarters for immigration, customs, and health inspections at the port. The completion of this facility is part of the larger Transnet Reinvent for Growth strategy aimed at improving operational efficiencies and enhancing value for users of the port. An investment of R22 million supports efforts to bolster the port’s competitiveness in marine tourism.

Mossel Bay has seen a consistent uptick in cruise traffic, becoming a favored stop for expedition cruise companies along the Garden Route. In the 2024-2025 season alone, the port recorded 21 cruise calls with over 13,000 passengers. Looking ahead to the 2025-2026 season, there are already 23 calls scheduled, with TNPA anticipating further growth as cruise lines expand their itineraries.
