Two Arrested After Ferry Grounding Incident Off the South Korean Coast
Two individuals were arrested, and the ferry’s captain is being investigated after the Queen Jenuvia II grounded on rocky shallows off South Korea’s southwestern coast. The incident, which occurred near the uninhabited Jogdo Island close to Jangsan Island in Shinan County, involved a total of 267 passengers and crew. Fortunately, all were evacuated successfully, although 27 individuals sustained minor injuries in the process.
The coast guard confirmed that the helmsman and first mate were charged with gross negligence that led to injuries. Initially, the helmsman claimed a steering malfunction, but later admitted his distraction due to his mobile phone, which caused him to overlook an essential navigational marker.
The Korea-flagged ferry was traveling from Jeju Island to Mokpo when it ran aground. The vessel has since been relocated to a nearby port, and investigations into the accident are ongoing.
Accounts from passengers shared on social media recounted the event, describing a loud bang followed by the ship listing significantly. Passengers were quickly instructed to put on life jackets and gather on the top deck for safety.
This grounding has drawn comparisons to the tragic Sewol ferry disaster of 2014, which resulted in over 300 fatalities, primarily schoolchildren. A diving instructor from Jeju Island recalled the intense fear felt during the incident and noted that the memory of the Sewol tragedy underscored the importance of staying calm and following safety procedures, including the use of life jackets.
