Construction Begins on the Second Orient Express Cruise Ship: Olympian
Chantiers de l’Atlantique has marked a significant milestone with the keel-laying ceremony for the Orient Express Olympian, the second ship in the Orient Express Sailing Yacht series and a sibling to the Orient Express Corinthian. This event, which took place at the shipyard in Saint-Nazaire, signifies the commencement of hull assembly with the setting of the first structural block into the dry dock. This important step comes ten months after the initial steel cutting, with the ship’s delivery anticipated in spring 2027.
The Olympian and its sister ship are set to be among the largest sailing vessels globally, boasting innovative features such as Chantiers de l’Atlantique’s proprietary SolidSail wind-assist technology. This advanced propulsion system includes three tilting masts equipped with 4,500 square meters of rigid sails, aiming to drastically cut down fuel usage by enabling wind-powered navigation under favorable conditions, supplemented by LNG for hybrid propulsion.
The inaugural yacht, the OE Corinthian, is slated for sea trials in December to assess the SolidSail system’s capabilities, which is expected to reach speeds of up to 17 knots under sail. Furthermore, the vessels will integrate environmentally-conscious technologies, including an AI marine mammal detection system to reduce collision risks and dynamic positioning features to prevent seabed damage from anchors. Itineraries are being curated with input from sailing experts to maximize favorable wind conditions.
This endeavor illustrates the Orient Express brand’s evolution from its rail heritage into the realm of ultra-luxury cruising, blending innovative maritime technology with the brand’s storied legacy.
