Havila Polaris Launches Coastal Ferry Service with Groundbreaking First Biogas Bunkering

The Havila Polaris ferry has embarked on a significant journey, marked by its first major intake of liquefied biogas. This event took place at Polarbase in Hammerfest, Norway, where the vessel received 200 cubic meters of biogas fuel from Barents Naturgass. This milestone signifies the beginning of a landmark coastal voyage, during which Havila Polaris aims to cut its CO₂ emissions by over 90%, showcasing the potential for low-emission operations in coastal shipping using existing vessel technologies.

On its upcoming round trip along Norway’s coastal route, Havila Polaris is set to take on a total of 350 cubic meters of liquefied biogas. The initial supply was delivered in Hammerfest on November 26, and the remaining volume was loaded in Bergen on November 30.

Bent Martini, the CEO of Havila Voyages, emphasized that this operation marks an important achievement for the company. He noted that the voyage exemplifies the capacity for very low emissions on the coastal route without necessitating technical modifications to the vessels.
