Helsingør Port in Denmark Becomes a Proud Member of Cruise Europe
Helsingor Port in Denmark has officially joined Cruise Europe, enhancing its status as a key destination in Northern European cruise itineraries. Known for its UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle, Helsingor combines historical significance with modern Scandinavian design, making it a captivating stop on Baltic cruises.
The port offers ideal conditions for tender operations, featuring a sheltered anchorage with depths over 20 meters and no size restrictions for vessels. Passengers are efficiently transferred via a 90 by 6 meters floating tender pier that can accommodate four boats at a time. The tender ride to the historic center takes just five to ten minutes, offering picturesque views of Kronborg Castle.
For larger vessels, the Royal Quay provides alongside docking facilities for ships up to 150 meters long, equipped with essential services such as fresh water supply and comprehensive waste disposal. The port is well-protected against extreme weather, with minimal tidal fluctuations and northbound currents ranging from one to three knots. Pilotage and tug assistance, while available, are not obligatory.
To streamline cruise operations, Helsingor has introduced a “Lite Call” concept that allows ships to either anchor at the port and ferry passengers to shore for short visits or dock in nearby Copenhagen with transport provided to Helsingor. This model reduces fixed port fees and allows for a visit of up to three hours, accommodating either embarkation or disembarkation. The sailing time to Copenhagen is about 1.5 hours, with land transfers to Helsingor taking approximately 45 minutes.
This new initiative harnesses Helsingor’s proximity to Copenhagen, making it easier for cruise lines to include this historic town in itineraries and for visitors to enjoy North Zealand’s attractions. Upon arrival, tourists receive maps and information, enabling immediate access to attractions such as Kronborg Castle, the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark, The Culture Yard, and the Renaissance town center. Furthermore, within a short drive are significant sites like Frederiksborg Castle, Fredensborg Palace, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
In recent seasons, Helsingor has hosted only 2-3 cruise ship calls per year, but by joining Cruise Europe and appointing Mathias Monrad Bruun as Cruise Manager, it aims to bolster its cruise presence and appeal within the Northern European market.
