Tragedy Strikes: Adirondac Cruise Ship Destroyed in Devastating Lake George Fire
A popular cruise ship on Lake George, known as The Adirondac, was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning. The incident occurred around 6:45 AM while the vessel, measuring 115 feet and accommodating up to 400 passengers, was tied to the dock. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Warren County officials received the first alert about the fire from an eyewitness. Upon arrival, emergency crews witnessed bright flames and thick smoke emanating from the ship. Firefighters worked diligently and managed to contain the blaze by approximately 7:20 AM. However, extensive damage had already occurred, including a partial collapse of the top deck into the middle section of the ship.
Warren County spokesman Don Lehman noted the prompt response of the firefighters but acknowledged that the ship suffered severe damage. Environmental concerns were also paramount, as crews from the state department of environmental conservation began efforts to prevent contamination of the lake from runoff, with trapped water being pumped out for proper disposal.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, involving multiple agencies. The Adirondac was not just a cruise ship, but a beloved attraction that offered sightseeing cruises, dinner parties, and private events since 2004. It was scheduled for holiday-themed cruises throughout December and special events for New Year’s Day.
Lake George Mayor Ray Perry expressed empathy towards the ship’s owner and offered potential assistance from the village, while reassuring that the absence of injuries was a relief.
This incident comes nearly two decades after a tragic event in 2005 when a previous vessel operated under the same ownership, the Ethan Allen tour boat, capsized, leading to the death of 20 individuals.
