Mystic Cruises Secures Exciting Newbuild Contract with China Merchants Shipyard

Mystic Cruises has officially signed a new shipbuilding contract with China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, marking a significant step in expanding its fleet. The agreement, finalized in early December and endorsed by Mystic’s president Mario Ferreira and Mei Zhonghua, general manager of the cruise ship division at China Merchants, includes the construction of one new cruise vessel, with the option for three additional ships.

While specific details regarding the ship’s design have not been shared, it has been confirmed that the new vessel will utilize tri-fuel propulsion technology, enabling it to employ various fuel types to meet evolving environmental regulations. The designated operating brand for the new ships remains undecided, allowing for potential deployment within either Atlas Ocean Voyages or nicko cruises.

This new approach marks a departure from Mystic’s previous strategy, which focused on small expedition ships built at the West Sea yard in Portugal. The decision to collaborate with a Chinese shipyard reflects the company’s need for additional construction capacity and indicates a future-relevant vision.

Furthermore, Mystic is looking to enhance existing expedition offerings by potentially integrating features learned from its latest classes of ships including the World Navigator, World Traveller, and World Voyager.

In conjunction with the new shipbuilding plans, Mystic and Atlas have upgraded their onboard technology, replacing static information displays with interactive touch screens for improved guest experiences and real-time voyage updates.
