MSC Cruises Expands Fleet with Order of 4 “New Frontier” Ships from Meyer Werft
MSC Cruises has officially announced a significant shipbuilding order with Meyer Werft, located in Papenburg, Germany. This order marks the launch of a new class of cruise ships, known as the “New Frontier” platform. The agreement includes four firm orders for next-generation cruise ships and two additional options, ensuring the German shipyard remains busy well into the 2030s.
The first ship under this new contract is set to be delivered in 2030, with subsequent vessels scheduled for annual delivery thereafter. Each of these ships will have an approximate gross tonnage of 180,000 and will accommodate up to 5,400 passengers, positioning them among the largest cruise vessels to be constructed in the upcoming decade.
The agreement was solidified at a ceremony in Berlin, with key representatives from the German federal government and the state of Lower Saxony in attendance, along with leadership from both MSC Cruises and Meyer Werft. The presence of governmental officials underscores the economic importance of this deal, which is expected to sustain shipyard operations and foster regional employment in northern Germany.
MSC’s executive chairman emphasized that this initiative allows the cruise line to enhance its itineraries and onboard hospitality while integrating advanced environmental technologies to meet its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
