Tragic Ferry Incident on Dhaleshwari River in Bangladesh Claims Three Lives
A ferry incident occurred on the Dhaleshwari River in the Baktaboli area of Narayanganj district, Bangladesh, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives. The accident took place late on Saturday evening as the ferry departed, when a loaded vehicle on board lost control.
As the ferry crossed the mid-river section between the eastern Baktaboli dock and Narsinghpur, several vehicles, including a motorcycle, two battery-operated auto-rickshaws, a van, and a loaded truck, fell overboard. Reports indicate that the truck moved unexpectedly, pushing the other vehicles into the water before it too sank.
Search and rescue operations launched soon after the incident confirmed the death of three individuals: a 30-year-old expatriate from Singapore, a 35-year-old motorcyclist, and a 25-year-old van driver. The truck driver managed to swim to safety, but the status of others on the ferry remained uncertain as operations were paused for the night. Recovery efforts for additional missing persons and the submerged vehicles are set to continue with the light of day.
Local authorities, including the river police and the additional superintendent of police for Narayanganj, have initiated an investigation into the events leading up to the loss of control of the truck and the ensuing incident.
