P&O Cruise Ship Diverts to Barbados Following Significant Technical Malfunction
P&O Cruises’ Britannia has encountered significant issues as it was forced to cut short a 14-night journey, returning early to its homeport for emergency repairs. Reports from passengers indicate that the ship faced power and propulsion difficulties, first identified when passengers experienced a power outage in Curaçao, resulting in lights going out briefly before backup systems restored power.
As the issues escalated, Britannia skipped its scheduled stop in Aruba and was instead directed to Barbados on January 3. Initially, the vessel was meant to spend two days in St. Lucia, but instead, it sailed directly for repairs. Passengers reported deteriorating conditions aboard due to a lack of essential supplies, including drinks, attributed to "over consumption" and insufficient stock for the extended voyage.
P&O Cruises confirmed that Britannia was undergoing repairs in Barbados but withheld specific details about the technical issues affecting the ship. While many guests expressed their growing concerns over the onboard shortages and limited services, the cruise line assured that repairs were proceeding, aiming to resume the original itinerary by the evening of January 5.
This incident added to the turmoil for P&O Cruises, which had just dealt with the challenges stemming from the Arvia, another ship that faced disruptions due to air traffic issues. Arvia’s extended stay in Bridgetown delayed Britannia’s docking until January 4.
In light of recent voyages, the cruise line faced criticism over operational management, as Britannia had to wait offshore until Arvia departed before it could dock and passengers could disembark.
