Greek Ferry Services Gradually Resume After Weather Disruptions
Ferry operations in Greece started to gradually resume on January 11th, 2026, as the strong winds that had previously grounded vessels diminished. Authorities, however, warned that the weather improvement might be short-lived.
According to reports from state broadcaster ERT, most ferry routes were back in service early Sunday, with many departures from the port of Piraeus beginning after 07:00 a.m. Even with the easing winds, passengers were advised to check schedules before traveling, as cancellations could occur on short notice due to unpredictable weather conditions.
Meteorological services indicated that the slight relief in wind strength would soon be replaced by another spell of unsettled weather, with colder conditions expected from later Sunday into Monday. Gale-force winds were predicted to return to parts of the Aegean Sea, along with heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Dodecanese.
Forecasts also warned of snowfall in mountainous and northern areas, with the potential for snow to affect lower elevations in parts of northern Greece. Temperatures are set to drop significantly, especially in the north, where frost is expected overnight and into Monday.
While ferry services cautiously resumed, officials noted that deteriorating conditions on land could lead to further disruptions, with stable weather not anticipated until midweek.
