Karachi Ferry Terminal Inaugurated: A New Era for Pakistan–Iran Passenger Service
A newly built ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust was inaugurated by the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, marking the start of Pakistan’s first international ferry service. This initiative aims to enhance coastal and regional connectivity while expanding the nation’s blue economy framework.
During the inauguration, the minister highlighted that the ferry service fulfills a longstanding goal of establishing modern and environmentally sustainable maritime passenger transport in Pakistan. The service will connect Karachi and Iran’s Chabahar Port, the first of its kind in the country. Operations are expected to begin in the third week of January, with an inaugural sailing accommodating up to 240 passengers, promising a travel time of 12 to 14 hours. The service will offer three round trips weekly, and the fare is set at Rs50,000 for a return journey.
Chaudhry emphasized that this project aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of leveraging maritime assets for economic diversity. He also noted the potential for tourism development, regional integration, and commercial exchange through this new transport link. The ferry license for this service is unprecedented in Pakistan, and the dedicated terminal is seen as a way to boost investor confidence and demonstrate the government’s commitment to a favorable environment for maritime ventures.
The Minister further stated that the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, along with related authorities, is working on regulatory reforms, infrastructure improvements, and public-private partnerships to enhance the maritime sector’s economic contribution. Several business groups have already shown interest in acquiring licenses for additional ferry services, suggesting future growth in maritime tourism and employment.
Additionally, Chaudhry encouraged investors to propose developments related to Pakistani ports, assuring them of government support. Plans are also underway for a modern industrial zone by the Port Qasim Authority, designed to provide international-standard infrastructure to promote export growth and port-led industrial development.
The inauguration event was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Karachi Port Trust, along with members of the shipping and business communities, all of whom view the terminal and ferry project as crucial steps toward enhancing Pakistan’s maritime capabilities and utilizing its coastal resources.
