Squall Disrupts Shore Transfers for HAL’s ms Noordam Passengers: What You Need to Know

Tender boat operations for Holland America Line’s ms Noordam faced a sudden disruption at Kiriwina Island, Papua New Guinea, due to an unexpected squall that produced wind gusts of approximately 40 knots (75 kph/46 mph). This rapid weather change rendered conditions unsafe for transfers between the ship and the shore.

Passengers reported that the localized storm developed without warning, impacting ongoing tender operations. The increase in wind speed caused unsecured items to shift on deck, prompting guests to seek shelter indoors as the situation worsened.

As conditions deteriorated further, the ship’s captain made the decision to suspend tender operations to ensure safety. At that time, around 700 guests had already disembarked and were temporarily onshore. They were informed that strong winds were pushing the ship towards nearby reefs, necessitating the halt in tendering while the vessel was maneuvered to a safer location.

Once the squall passed and the winds calmed, tender operations resumed, and all passengers were safely returned to the ship without any reported injuries.

Currently, ms Noordam is on a 42-day cruise journey from Sydney to Auckland. Following the canceled call at Kiriwina Island, the cruise itinerary includes a scheduled sea day, with the next port of call being Honiara in the Solomon Islands.
