Squall Disrupts Shore Transfers for HAL’s ms Noordam Passengers: What You Need to Know
Tender operations for Holland America Line’s ms Noordam were unexpectedly halted at Kiriwina Island, Papua New Guinea, due to a swift squall that manifested with wind gusts reaching approximately 40 knots (75 kph/46 mph). The sudden change in weather created unsafe conditions for transferring passengers from the ship to shore.
Passengers reported that the squall arrived with little warning while tender boat operations were ongoing. The rising winds began to affect the ship’s deck, causing unsecured items to shift and prompting passengers to seek shelter indoors. As conditions continued to deteriorate, the ship’s captain made the decision to suspend all tender movements, as it became unmanageable for the boats to safely dock.
At that time, around 700 passengers had already disembarked and remained on Kiriwina Island under the crew’s supervision. Guests were informed about the situation, including how the high winds were causing the ship to drift toward nearby reefs, necessitating the temporary halting of tendering operations for the ship to be repositioned safely.
Once the squall passed and the winds calmed, tender operations resumed, and all passengers were brought back to the ms Noordam without any reported injuries.
The ms Noordam is currently on a 42-day voyage starting from Sydney and is scheduled to travel to Auckland. After the interrupted call at Kiriwina Island, the cruise itinerary includes a day at sea before proceeding to Honiara in the Solomon Islands.
