Ponant Unveils Plans to Launch Two New Cruise Ships in French Polynesia for 2026-2027
Ponant Explorations Group is expanding its operations in French Polynesia for the winter season of 2026-2027 by deploying two cruise ships, enhancing both capacity and itinerary options in the area. This strategic move comes after nearly thirty years of service in Polynesian waters with its established vessel, Paul Gauguin.
The company will introduce Le Jacques Cartier, which will operate alongside Paul Gauguin. Each ship targets different segments of the market, offering unique experiences to guests. Paul Gauguin, designed for shallow lagoons and a staple in French Polynesia, will continue its residence with 66 planned departures, focusing on the Society Islands, Tuamotu, and Marquesas, while occasionally venturing to the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Tonga.
In contrast, Le Jacques Cartier will serve as an expedition vessel, exploring less-visited archipelagos with nine scheduled departures. It will accommodate guests in 92 staterooms and suites and will forge itineraries that include the Tuamotu, Marquesas, Austral, Gambier, and Pitcairn Islands. Among these are three new "Discovery" itineraries that can be combined into a comprehensive 42-night voyage across six archipelagos and 23 islands.
The development of these new routes comes from extensive reconnaissance conducted by José Sarica, the expedition experience director, which sought to establish collaborations with local communities. This has facilitated the introduction of six new ports within the Austral and Tuamotu Islands, leading to planned activities such as artisan workshops, cultural welcomes, and visits to traditional sacred sites known as marae.
Operationally, the two ships will uphold distinct approaches to onboard experiences and shore activities. Paul Gauguin will maintain its focus on cultural engagement with Tahitian hosts and an array of optional shore excursions, supported by a certified dive team on board. Meanwhile, Le Jacques Cartier will deliver a more structured expedition model, offering one guided activity per guest each day, emphasizing local insights with access via tenders and zodiac boats.
