Heroic Coast Guard Rescue: Cruise Ship Freed from Antarctic Icebound Peril
The U.S. Coast Guard recently conducted a remarkable operation to rescue a cruise ship trapped in ice off the coast of Antarctica. On January 17, the Cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II, owned by an Australian company, called for assistance after becoming immobilized. In response, the Coast Guard dispatched the Polar Star, its most powerful icebreaker, which has been in service for 50 years.
With an impressive 75,000 horsepower, the Polar Star navigated through thick ice to reach the stranded vessel. The crew encircled the Scenic Eclipse II twice, breaking the surrounding ice before escorting it to open water, approximately four nautical miles away from its initial position, which was eight nautical miles from McMurdo Sound.
Captain Jeff Rasnake, commanding officer of the Polar Star, praised his crew’s unwavering enthusiasm and commitment despite the mission’s challenges. The operation forms part of Operation Deep Freeze 2026, a military initiative supporting the National Science Foundation’s U.S. Antarctic Program. This multi-faceted operation involves conducting research, search and rescue efforts, airdrops, transportation support, and icebreaking tasks, among other services.
The Polar Star, which is the only active heavy icebreaker in the United States, has been deployed 29 times to support the Antarctic Program since its commissioning in 1976. This rescue operation not only emphasizes the Coast Guard’s vital role in Antarctic missions but also showcases its commitment to maritime safety and support in extreme conditions.
