Norwegian Cruise Ship Returns to New York Early Amid Winter Storm Warnings
Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Breakaway has altered its itinerary to return early to New York City due to an impending bomb cyclone. Originally scheduled to arrive on February 3, the ship will now dock on February 1 at 11 p.m. EST. This change means the cruise will miss its planned stop in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, on January 30.
The decision was made as a precaution against the winter storm, which could bring hazardous weather conditions to the East Coast. Acknowledging the potential impact of the storm, the cruise line stated, "A large winter weather system moving through the eastern United States… is affecting our ability to return to New York City on the original schedule."
Instead of arriving on the original date, the ship’s guests will spend an unexpected extra day in New York, allowing them access to onboard amenities, albeit with the casino remaining closed while in port. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the city and may disembark early if they prefer.
The storm is likely to produce significant snow and strong winds across a broad area, with some regions anticipating blizzard conditions. Parts of North Carolina through New Jersey are particularly at risk, with temperatures across New York dropping significantly, prompting a cold weather advisory.
Similar to the Norwegian Breakaway, Carnival Sunshine is also returning early to Norfolk to avoid the storm’s effects. With both cruise lines prioritizing the safety of their passengers and crew, travelers need to stay informed about weather developments as their voyage approaches.
