RCG-Royal Caribbean Expands Fleet with Discovery Class Newbuilds Ordered from Chantiers de l’Atlantique

RCG-Royal Caribbean Group has taken a significant step in its fleet development strategy by signing agreements for a new class of cruise ships, known as the Discovery Class, with Chantiers de l’Atlantique. This new program includes two confirmed orders and options to expand by four additional vessels.

The inaugural ship of the Discovery Class is set for delivery in 2029, with a second ship expected to follow in the early 2030s. RCG’s leadership has described this class as a notable shift from past designs, aiming to create ships distinct from earlier Royal Caribbean vessels. These ships are designed specifically for destination-focused itineraries, featuring enhancements that support immersive travel experiences.

RCG frames this development as part of a longer-term approach that incorporates functional design aims with innovations in technology. The decision to collaborate again with Chantiers de l’Atlantique highlights the group’s trust in the shipyard’s advanced capabilities and infrastructure for constructing complex, large-scale passenger vessels.

Historically, RCG and Chantiers de l’Atlantique have enjoyed a partnership dating back nearly 40 years, during which the yard has constructed many pivotal ships for the group, including the Sovereign Class and the famed OASIS Class ships. To date, Chantiers has delivered 21 vessels to Royal Caribbean Group and continues to work on several others currently in production.

For Chantiers de l’Atlantique, the Discovery Class project presents an opportunity to integrate new construction techniques and technologies that meet the evolving demands of operations and passengers.
