Another Major Port Considers Implementing a Cruise Ship Ban
With a surge in large cruise ships, which can carry up to 5,000 passengers, cities unprepared for such high visitor volumes are feeling the strain. Recent developments include Barcelona and Dubrovnik implementing visitor restrictions to tackle overtourism, while a French court recently overturned Nice’s mayor’s attempt to ban cruise ships with over 900 passengers. In the latest move, Amsterdam, one of Europe’s most visited cities, is contemplating a significant ban on sea cruises. With over seven million international tourists in 2025—representing nearly ten visitors for each resident—the city’s infrastructure is under immense pressure. In a recent announcement, Amsterdam’s local government indicated it would explore permanently ending sea cruises by 2035, after discovering that relocating the port would be economically prohibitive.
