Maritime traffic in the Strait of Gibraltar faced significant disruption on February 7, 2026, due to strong winds and rough seas brought by Storm Marta. Authorities canceled ferry services that connect southern Spain with ports in Morocco and Ceuta as the conditions became unsafe. The port of Algeciras halted all sailings to Morocco’s Tanger Med after the Moroccan port declared a midday closure for safety reasons. Passenger access to the quay was entirely suspended, and freight truck movements to Tanger Med were also restricted.
The busy Algeciras–Ceuta route experienced initial cancellations of high-speed sailings in the early morning. Operators attempted to resume routes briefly, but ultimately, all further departures for the day were called off as adverse weather persisted. Although one ferry operator continued its rotations where conditions permitted, another withdrew its afternoon services on the Jaume III ferry, highlighting the ongoing unfavorable maritime environment.
This latest disruption follows a brief respite earlier in the week when ferry services had resumed after being affected by Storm Leonardo. Meteorological services from both Spain and Morocco issued yellow and orange weather alerts for the region, warning of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and hazardous coastal conditions. Gusts were expected to reach 80 km/h, with sea heights building to around four meters, directly contributing to the ongoing disturbances in ferry operations. Authorities have advised mariners and travelers to check for updates from ferry operators before heading to terminals, given the likelihood of more last-minute cancellations as the storm system continues to impact the area.
