MSC Poesia Set to Host ORCA Marine Mammal Observer in Alaska: A 2026 Expedition
MSC Cruises has partnered with the marine conservation organization ORCA to appoint a dedicated Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) aboard the MSC Poesia during its inaugural season in Alaska in the summer of 2026. This initiative reflects MSC’s commitment to applying scientific methods for environmental stewardship and enhancing sustainable maritime practices.
The ORCA-trained MMO will embark on the cruise for one month, from late July to late August, which is known for its high whale concentrations. The observer’s role includes gathering vital data on how cetaceans behave and respond to large vessels, with findings intended to benefit the broader scientific community. Additionally, these insights will help improve whale avoidance training provided by ORCA to various shipping and cruise lines, including MSC.
ORCA will also advise on the operations at Alaskan destinations, conducting a thorough review of current whale-watching excursions to identify industry best practices. Collaborative assessments throughout the season will offer real-time feedback to maintain high standards in wildlife tourism, ensuring minimal disturbance to marine life.
To enrich the experience for passengers, the MMO will lead educational sessions onboard to explain the research goals and encourage participation in ORCA’s citizen science initiatives. This partnership was officially announced during the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Pacific Northwest Symposium in Anchorage, highlighting ongoing discussions about sustainable practices in the cruise industry. The MSC Poesia is set to operate 7-night cruises from Seattle, with bookings already available for the 2027 Alaska season due to increased demand.
