Medevac Operations: Two Passengers Rescued from Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas

During an Eastern Caribbean cruise, Royal Caribbean International’s ship, Icon of the Seas, conducted a medical evacuation for two passengers experiencing serious pulmonary issues while navigating near Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic on February 2, 2026. The ship was en route to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands when the request for assistance came from its medical team in the early hours of the morning.

In response, local authorities activated emergency protocols, deploying an interceptor craft in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Navy and national emergency services. The two affected passengers, accompanied by a relative, were successfully transferred from the ship to a medical facility ashore for further evaluation and treatment. Thankfully, both individuals showed a positive response to the care they received and were discharged once their conditions improved.

Details concerning the specific nature of the illnesses have not been disclosed. Importantly, the evacuation did not disrupt the ship’s scheduled itinerary, and Icon of the Seas continued on its journey after the operation was complete.
