Heroic Rescue at Sea: MV Isle of Islay’s Daring Delivery Passage to Scotland
During its delivery journey to Scotland, the MV Isle of Islay, a new ferry for CalMac, successfully rescued a man from the sea off the coast of Morocco. The Ro-Pax vessel was on its way from a Turkish shipyard when it faced adverse weather, which forced it to anchor near Gibraltar and continue through Moroccan waters.
While navigating these challenging conditions, the crew spotted a person in the water. Promptly, the bridge team activated rescue protocols and dispatched the fast rescue craft to retrieve the man. Once safely onboard, he received care from the ferry’s crew for several days before being handed over to the Moroccan authorities.
The fleet management director of CalMac praised the crew for their professionalism and swift action, emphasizing their training for such maritime emergencies, especially when working with coastguard services in Scottish waters. He noted that the newly delivered vessel and its crew demonstrated exceptional capability in responding to this urgent situation.
MV Isle of Islay, which accommodates 450 passengers and vehicles, is one of four vessels currently under construction in Turkey. Its delivery has been hampered by severe weather, with wind reports showing sustained winds over 30 knots and gusts exceeding 50 knots. The ferry had to anchor off the Moroccan coast before arriving at Almeria over the weekend, where it will wait for favorable weather to proceed towards A Coruna in northern Spain, eventually heading towards the UK.
The director mentioned that delivering the ferry during winter poses challenges due to severe sea conditions and storms from the Iberian Peninsula. The estimated arrival date in Scotland will be confirmed as the situation develops. Once operational, the MV Isle of Islay will service routes between the islands of Islay and Jura.
