Thorough Maritime Safety Investigation Underway After Carnival Encounter in Darwin Harbour
Investigators from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) conducted an inspection of the cruise ship Carnival Encounter on February 9, 2026, while it was docked in Darwin Harbour. The investigation was triggered by reports from an anonymous crew member, communicated through the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA), bringing attention to possible safety and welfare violations on board.
The allegations presented to AMSA included claims of cramped living conditions, frequent skin infections, inadequate drinking water quality, and instances of crew members working despite being seriously ill. Additionally, there were concerns about low wages for crew members—sometimes just a few dollars an hour—and that foreign crew members were operating under contracts exempt from Australian labor laws even while working in Australian waters.
In response to the inspection, Carnival Cruise Line stated that no deficiencies were uncovered by AMSA during their review of the Carnival Encounter. The company affirmed its commitment to cooperating with the regulatory body, and emphasized the regularity of such inspections to ensure compliance with international crew welfare standards.
