Seabourn Cancels Its Expedition Submarine Program: What This Means for Future Voyages
In a strategic move to align with current operational capabilities, Seabourn has decided to discontinue its expedition submarine programme as the Antarctic season comes to a close. This decision means that the custom-built submersibles aboard the Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit will be phased out over the next six weeks.
Initially launched with integrated submarine capabilities in 2022 and 2023, these submersibles were intended to enhance the expedition experience. However, lower-than-expected engagement from guests has led to concerns about the operational viability of this offering. The demands of maintenance and the need for regular recertification of the specialized equipment also created challenges, making the programme difficult to sustain.
In addition, evolving regulatory requirements in various operational regions further restricted submarine activities, limiting potential deployment areas.
Despite this withdrawal, Seabourn’s expedition offerings remain robust, featuring a range of activities designed to connect travelers with remote environments, including Zodiac excursions, sea kayaking, and guided shore hikes. The discontinuation of the submarine experience does not affect these core expedition offerings, which will continue to be available on both ships.
Travel advisors have been contacted to inform clients with reservations for submarine dives about alternative arrangements or refunds, in line with standard practices when optional excursions are removed.
Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit will continue their journeys through polar and remote regions, maintaining their Polar Class standards and offering immersive experiences guided by expert expedition teams.
