Scenic Group Celebrates 40 Years with Exciting Fleet Expansion Program
Scenic Group, a prominent river, luxury yacht, and touring operator, is celebrating its 40th anniversary with a significant expansion of its fleet and product offerings. Established in 1986 in Newcastle, NSW, by Glen Moroney, Scenic has transformed from a local coach tour company into a global leader in premium cruise and travel experiences.
During the annual Night of Stars event held in Sydney, the General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Australia and Asia Pacific announced plans for further developments beyond the current fleet commitments. This event also highlighted the company’s progress and future aspirations. Over the last three decades, Scenic has pioneered balcony-equipped river vessels, ventured into expedition cruising, and launched boutique yachts.
As part of its growth strategy, Scenic has several new vessels under construction, including the superyacht Emerald Kaia, the riverboats Emerald Astra and Emerald Lumi, and a new class of discovery yacht called Scenic Ikon. These vessels are being built at company-managed shipyards in Vietnam and Croatia, allowing Scenic to maintain control over design and operational standards.
The company’s distribution network has also seen remarkable growth. A decade ago, only three travel agencies generated between $5 million and $10 million in annual revenue from Scenic products, but this has now increased to 59 agencies. Management reported a significant recovery in travel demand, with customers opting for longer journeys that often combine multiple product categories.
Scenic Group operates or has around 25 ships across various brands, including Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours and Emerald Cruises. Its fleet includes European river ships, Southeast Asian river vessels, expedition yachts, and ocean-going yachts. New yacht introductions are planned for 2027 and 2028, designed to accommodate 548 guests on exclusive Mediterranean and Caribbean itineraries.
One of the highlight developments is the Scenic Ikon, a next-generation discovery yacht that builds on the success of Scenic Eclipse. Scenic Eclipse will return to Australia in 2028, enhancing access to expedition cruising for local travelers.
Emerald Cruises continues to grow with the introduction of new-generation vessels and plans to expand its river programs into the Seine by 2027. Additionally, land-based touring programs will re-enter markets like Africa, Egypt, and Japan to complement cruise itineraries.
The company’s leadership stresses the advantages of having integrated ship design, construction, operations, and commercial management, allowing for operational control and flexibility that fosters innovation. As Scenic Group enters its fifth decade, its focus remains on fleet investment and product diversification, reinforcing its commitment to offering premium travel experiences across water routes.
