Anchoring in Paradise: The 2026 CLIA European Summit Set to Take Place in Madeira
European leaders in the cruise sector are set to convene in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, from February 23 to 26 for the 2026 European Summit organized by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). This event is hosted in partnership with the Regional Government of Madeira and the Ports Administration of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, focusing on topics such as sustainable growth, connectivity, and the preparedness of destinations within the broader context of European transport, tourism, and climate policy.
CLIA describes the summit as a key policy forum that unites executives from cruise companies, European institutions, national and regional authorities, and maritime organizations among others. Funchal’s hosting highlights Madeira as a central hub for discussions on the cruise industry’s strategic role in European tourism development, particularly concerning island territories and Atlantic regions.
Key participants include the Secretary of State for Infrastructure of Portugal, the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, and the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, who will contribute via video. Prominent industry figures such as the association’s president and CEO, leaders from major cruise operators, port administrations, and maritime organizations will also attend.
The summit’s agenda will tackle the economic impact of cruising, regional development, pathways to decarbonization, port readiness, and responsible tourism practices. The association’s president emphasized that this summit occurs at a pivotal time as Europe steers its transport and climate agendas forward, aiming to foster economic growth while integrating sustainable practices.
Madeira has reportedly seen its strongest cruise seasons in 2024 and 2025, welcoming over 740,000 passengers and making significant contributions to the regional economy. Additionally, the destination was honored as Europe’s Best Cruise Destination for 2025 through an international industry award.
Local authorities and port operators are actively investing in digital systems, environmental monitoring, and energy transition initiatives to enhance operational capacity and resilience in support of cruise activities.
The summit enjoys support from various maritime industry partners, with numerous organizations sponsoring the event, showcasing strong commercial and technical backing for its mission and objectives.
