Interpol Tracks Down Fugitive Ex-NCL Officer Linked to Major Fraud Investigation

A significant legal situation has surfaced involving a former high-ranking official of a major cruise company, drawing the attention of international law enforcement. Thomas Markell, the former Senior Director of Events for Norwegian Cruise Line, was located and apprehended in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His arrest follows a federal warrant issued in the United States as part of a broader investigation into a suspected fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded the company out of over $2 million.

Authorities from both Interpol and Argentina played crucial roles in his detention. Markell is currently awaiting extradition to the United States. Prosecutors assert that during his tenure, Markell was responsible for approving vendors and authorizing payments for corporate event services. It is alleged that he approved a series of fraudulent invoices that masqueraded as legitimate business expenses, enabling significant sums to be disbursed with minimal oversight.

Between mid-2021 and late 2023, some payments were reportedly as high as $165,921. Multiple transfers were sent through intermediary accounts linked to various third parties. Prosecutors contend that Markell executed concealment tactics to obscure the origins and final destinations of these funds. For instance, he allegedly set up a fictitious production services company to fabricate the fraudulent invoices, including a payment of $82,000 directed to an account associated with his girlfriend.

In the federal court documents from the U.S., Markell is facing multiple charges including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The indictment notes at least seven counts of wire fraud, each potentially leading to severe penalties upon conviction.

Markell’s flight from the United States while under investigation prompted an international manhunt that concluded with his arrest in Argentina. He remains in custody as extradition proceedings progress.
