Cruise Companies Adjust Itineraries Amid Growing Security Concerns in Mexico
Major cruise lines in the United States have begun to alter their ship itineraries in Mexican waters due to escalating unrest following the assassination of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as "El Mencho," during a military operation. The violence has been widespread, resulting in clashes and heightened security measures across several states in Mexico, including road blockades.
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings announced that the Norwegian Bliss, capable of carrying 4,000 passengers, will skip its planned stop in Puerto Vallarta. The company assured that further changes to sailing routes will be communicated to guests directly.
Similarly, Carnival Corporation’s Royal Princess will also bypass Puerto Vallarta, continuing instead to Cabo San Lucas and then on to Mazatlán. Another ship from Holland America Line has opted to spend a day at sea rather than docking at ports along the Mexican Riviera.
Royal Caribbean has currently retained its scheduled itineraries but promised to inform guests and travel agents if conditions change.
These itinerary adjustments come amid broader disruptions in the region, with airlines halting or canceling flights to both Puerto Vallarta and Guadalajara in light of security concerns and travel advisories from various foreign governments.
