Hapag-Lloyd Cruises Expands Winter Expedition Offerings to the Indian Ocean
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has unveiled a significant expansion of its winter 2027-2028 expedition program, focusing on the warmer waters of the western Indian Ocean. This new initiative will run parallel to its existing polar itineraries, allowing travelers to explore tropical and subtropical destinations for the first time as a key seasonal offering.
The expedition vessel HANSEATIC nature will embark on ten cruises from October 2027 to March 2028, targeting remote coastlines and islands in the Indian Ocean, with prominent stops in Madagascar and the Seychelles. This marks a notable shift in Hapag-Lloyd’s operational strategy, integrating these warmer routes into their offerings typically associated with Antarctic adventures.
Passengers will have the unique option to choose between classic Antarctic voyages and the new Indian Ocean explorations, both conducted under Hapag-Lloyd’s high expedition standards. The itineraries will include navigation through the nearshore waters of West Africa, South Africa, Madagascar, and the Seychelles – regions celebrated for their rich biodiversity.
The company aims to facilitate landings in conservation zones, lagoons, and coral reefs using onboard Zodiac craft, which can access areas larger ships cannot. Guests will also benefit from educational briefings and insights provided by expert teams covering ecological, cultural, and geological topics relevant to the regions visited.
