Dockworkers’ Protest Disrupts Port Maceio Access Ahead of MSC Seaview’s Arrival

Access to the Port of Maceió in Brazil faced significant disruption on Wednesday morning as dockworkers initiated a protest, blocking one of the main routes leading to the port. The demonstration occurred on Avenida Cícero Toledo in the Jaraguá district, where workers set up barricades and displayed banners announcing their strike. This action resulted in severe traffic congestion for trucks and other vehicles attempting to access the port facilities.

By approximately 7:30 a.m., two of the road’s three lanes were obstructed, leading to extensive traffic jams that extended into nearby parking areas in Jaraguá. The timing of the protest was particularly critical as the MSC Seaview was scheduled to arrive at the port around 10 a.m., which typically increases activity at the terminal as buses, taxis, and tour operators ready themselves for passenger transfers and shore excursions.

Protesters cited their demands were focused on wage adjustments linked to the INPC inflation index and the need for lower employee health plan costs. They made it clear that these issues must be addressed before they would consider ending the work stoppage. As of the morning of the protest, port authorities had not released any formal statements regarding the situation or its possible impact on operations.
