Cruise Ships Stranded in the Arabian Gulf as Operators Work to Repatriate Passengers
Regional tensions in the Middle East have significantly impacted cruise shipping operations in the Arabian Gulf, resulting in numerous vessels being unable to depart from key ports such as Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi. This disruption has led to the cancellation of several planned voyages to Europe, as cruise lines focus on repatriating thousands of stranded passengers.
The International Maritime Organization reported that around 15,000 cruise tourists were affected due to multiple cruise operators, including MSC, TUI, Celestyal, and AROYA, keeping their ships docked in Gulf ports. Specifically, Celestyal Cruises confirmed that its ships, the Celestyal Discovery and Celestyal Journey, were unable to set sail. Passengers aboard the Celestyal Discovery were safely disembarked, while those on the Celestyal Journey are expected to disembark soon. Celestyal Cruises has announced cancellations for two upcoming Mediterranean sailings as they arrange to reposition their vessels.
Similarly, AROYA Cruises halted its Arabian Gulf winter program, with successful passenger disembarkation reported earlier this month. Meanwhile, MSC has coordinated repatriation flights for over 1,500 guests from MSC Euribia, organizing multiple flights to return passengers to home countries including the UK, Italy, and the US.
TUI Cruises has also suspended several sailings, including those of Mein Schiff 4 and Mein Schiff 5, which remain docked in Abu Dhabi and Doha, respectively. The company is in the process of facilitating the repatriation of passengers and crew using charter and commercial flights.
As the situation evolves, affected cruise operators are working diligently to manage passenger needs and ensure safe returns amidst the ongoing regional uncertainties.
