Safety Concerns Lead to Canceled Cruise Visits to Scenic Alaskan Destination
Scenic cruising in Alaska, particularly through stunning fjords for glacier viewing, is a major attraction for many travelers. Unfortunately, as Alaska’s cruise season approaches for 2026, it has been announced that visits to Tracy Arm Fjord near Juneau will be canceled due to safety concerns stemming from a significant geological event.
In August 2025, a major landslide triggered a tsunami in Tracy Arm, creating dangerous conditions for vessels attempting to navigate the area. Although there were no reported injuries because the landslide occurred early in the morning before any cruise ships were operating, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has expressed concerns over ongoing instability in the region. They warned of potential rockfalls and smaller landslide events that could impact navigation and safety, making it hazardous for vessels to operate in 2026.
As a result, cruise lines, including Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Norwegian Cruise Line, have already begun altering their itineraries. Holland America has informed passengers that the 2026 sailings will now include excursions to Endicott Arm Fjord instead, which is known for offering equally impressive views, including the active Dawes Glacier. This change is being made to ensure passenger safety while still providing an opportunity to experience Alaska’s breathtaking natural scenery.
Endicott Arm features a wider passage than Tracy Arm and is a breeding ground for glacial harbor seals, with opportunities to observe seals and their pups during the spring and early summer. Although missing out on Tracy Arm may disappoint many, Endicott Arm promises a captivating and scenic alternative for cruise travelers in 2026.
