AmaSofia: AmaWaterways’ Latest Ship Christened at ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam
AmaWaterways celebrated the christening of its newest riverboat, AmaSofia, on March 14, 2026, during a ceremony on the Rhine River as part of the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam. The event welcomed over a thousand travel advisors who gathered for the occasion, which was held across several vessels in AmaWaterways’ fleet, including AmaPrima and AmaVenita.
The christening was performed by Sarah Little, a senior executive of the American Society of Travel Advisors, who had been appointed godmother of the ship ahead of its launch. The ceremony culminated in a spectacular aerial display marking both the christening and the conclusion of the expo.
AmaWaterways emphasized the significance of this new vessel, highlighting that its introduction reflects not just its construction but also the relationships built with its crew, passengers, and travel advisors. The choice of Little as godmother acknowledged her important role in the industry and her connection to travel advisors, aligning with the company’s values.
AmaSofia is the first ship in the fleet to showcase the operator’s updated branding for Europe and is designed to carry 154 passengers in 76 staterooms. It features familiar amenities such as dual-balcony configurations and a specialty dining venue.
Following the christening, a series of familiarization sailings were planned for travel advisors to experience AmaSofia’s design and service firsthand. The vessel entered service on the Rhine for the 2026 season and is set to transition to the Danube in early June, offering established routes that connect Central European ports, including Budapest and Vilshofen.
