AmaWaterways Unveils AmaSofia: A New Gem in River Cruising at ASTA Expo in Amsterdam

AmaWaterways formally christened its latest riverboat, AmaSofia, on March 14th during the ASTA River Cruise Expo, which took place in Amsterdam. The event witnessed over a thousand travel advisors, who gathered for the occasion, alongside multiple vessels in the AmaWaterways fleet including AmaPrima and AmaVenita.

The christening ceremony was conducted by Sarah Little, an executive with the American Society of Travel Advisors, who was appointed the ship’s godmother earlier. The event culminated with a spectacular aerial display above the Rhine, celebrating both the ship’s naming and the conclusion of the expo.

Company representatives emphasized that the launch of a new vessel is a collaborative effort involving everyone connected to its operation—from the crew to travel advisors. Little’s appointment as godmother highlighted her significant role in the industry and her long-standing efforts to support travel advisors, aligning with AmaWaterways’ values.

AmaSofia marks the first ship in the AmaWaterways fleet to showcase the company’s refreshed branding in Europe. The design accommodates 154 passengers across 76 staterooms, featuring popular amenities like dual-balcony configurations and a specialty dining venue.

Regarded as a professional honor, Little expressed her enthusiasm for being named godmother, reflecting on her connection to river cruising and the importance of the ceremony in front of her industry peers at the Amsterdam expo.

After entering service on the Rhine at the beginning of the 2026 season, AmaSofia is set for itineraries along the river through the spring, with plans to reposition to the Danube in early June. Once repositioned, it will operate established routes connecting major Central European cities, including Budapest and Vilshofen.

The christening of AmaSofia is part of a broader strategy to expand AmaWaterways’ fleet while fostering ongoing partnerships with travel advisors. Following the ceremony, several advisors were scheduled for familiarization sailings to gain insight into the ship’s services and design.
