AmaWaterways’ AmaSofia Faces Propulsion Failure on Inaugural Voyage: What Happened?

During its inaugural voyage along the Rhine, the newly delivered AmaSofia faced a propulsion failure affecting two of its three engines. This incident led to an unscheduled service interruption and required towing the vessel to Koblenz for repairs.

In the early hours of March 18th, the vessel’s bridge team was notified of a power loss on the port-side engine, soon followed by a similar failure on the starboard engine, both located at the rear of the ship. With only the forward engine operational, the command decided that navigating through a busy and narrow section of the river would pose too much risk. Consequently, the AmaSofia was anchored west of Urmitz-Bahnhof while arrangements for technical support were made.

A cargo vessel was then tasked with towing AmaSofia to Koblenz, allowing for further repairs to be conducted. A shoreside engineering team was dispatched to assist the onboard technicians who worked diligently to identify and fix the propulsion issues.

The voyage primarily consisted of U.S.-based travel advisors who had attended the ASTA River Cruise Expo, necessitating changes in their planned itinerary. A planned stop at Rüdesheim was replaced with shore excursions in Koblenz while the ship remained docked.

Communications from the ship’s leadership indicated that they were making every effort to solve the technical issues with minimal disruption. Contingency plans aimed to include the regular daylight transit through the Rhine Gorge once repairs were completed. The response from the crew was prompt, demonstrating effective coordination between the onboard team and external support to expedite the return to typical operations.

Despite the unforeseen interruption, activities onboard continued as planned, with adjustments made to fit the new circumstances. Industry representatives onboard highlighted that mechanical issues, while challenging, are a common reality in river navigation.

This incident occurred shortly after the AmaSofia’s christening, presenting an early operational hurdle for the vessel as it began its first season of service in Europe.
