AmaWaterways Unveils AmaSofia: A Stunning New Ship Christened at ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam
AmaWaterways celebrated the christening of its newest riverboat, AmaSofia, on March 14th during the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo held in Amsterdam. The event attracted over a thousand travel advisors, with the ceremony taking place across various vessels in AmaWaterways’ fleet, including AmaPrima and AmaVenita, in addition to the newly launched ship.
The christening was officiated by Sarah Little, a senior executive from the American Society of Travel Advisors, who had been named the godmother of the AmaSofia prior to the event. The ceremony culminated with a stunning aerial display over the Rhine River, symbolizing both the ship’s introduction and the end of the expo.
AmaSofia is notable as the first vessel in the fleet to showcase the company’s updated branding in Europe. Designed to accommodate 154 guests in 76 staterooms, it features familiar amenities from the operator like dual balconies and a dedicated specialty dining venue. The godmother expressed her gratitude for her appointment, highlighting her experience in river cruising and the significance of conducting the ceremony among industry peers.
The vessel commenced its service on the Rhine at the start of the 2026 season, with plans to transition to Danube routes in early June, servicing connections between key Central European ports such as Budapest and Vilshofen. This christening is part of a strategic expansion for AmaWaterways, emphasizing collaboration with travel partners and ensuring familiarity with the new ship’s design and operations among advisors through upcoming familiarization sailings.
