Orient Express Corinthian Achieves Record-Breaking Wind Propulsion

The Orient Express Corinthian, an ambitious sailing cruise vessel, is being constructed as one of the largest of its kind, measuring about 220 meters (721 feet) in length and boasting a gross tonnage of over 25,000. With a focus on luxury, it will host just 110 guests in 54 suites, embracing a low-density occupancy model.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique, this ship features a hybrid propulsion system that combines wind energy with liquefied natural gas engines. A standout aspect of its design is the Solid Sail system, which utilizes advanced rigid sail technology to enhance wind propulsion and minimize the need for traditional fuel.

The ship’s propulsion is facilitated by three carbon-fiber masts that stand nearly 100 meters above the water. Each mast supports roughly 1,500 square meters of rigid sail panels, amounting to a total sail area of approximately 4,500 square meters. These sails are designed with rotating and tilting capabilities, allowing them to be adjusted in 360 degrees to leverage optimal wind conditions.

The masts can also tilt significantly, ensuring the vessel can navigate under bridges and other overhead structures while maintaining flexibility in its operations. This design significantly improves both aerodynamic efficiency and maneuverability when sailing.

Initial sea trials have shown that the ship can effectively operate solely on sail power, achieving speeds of about 17 knots (around 20 miles per hour) under favorable conditions. Its hybrid system allows for a smooth switch between wind-assisted sailing and engine-powered travel, adapting to varying environmental conditions.

Development of the Solid Sail technology has spanned over a decade, involving comprehensive testing, including scale-model trials and full-scale demonstrations at the shipbuilder’s facility in Saint-Nazaire. These evaluations were aimed at optimizing aerodynamic performance, structural integrity, and sail control before being incorporated into the full-size ship.
