Viking Libra: A New Era of Luxury Cruising Launched at Fincantieri Ancona Shipyard
The Viking Libra, a cruise ship currently under construction for Viking Group, has reached a significant milestone at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy. The vessel has been floated out, marking the transition from the primary hull assembly to the final outfitting and systems integration stages.
Set to be delivered by the end of 2026, Viking Libra is part of Viking OCEAN’s fleet expansion and showcases a unique propulsion system utilizing liquefied hydrogen and fuel cell technology. This advanced configuration aims to achieve zero emissions under certain operational conditions, offering access to ecologically sensitive waters and aligning with industry-wide efforts toward decarbonization.
Weighing approximately 54,300 gross tons and measuring 239 meters (784 feet) long, the ship will host up to 998 passengers in 499 staterooms, in line with Viking’s small-ship format.
The construction project is a result of an ongoing partnership between Viking and Fincantieri, which began in 2012 and has included numerous confirmed orders. The Ancona facility has been a central production site, benefiting from ongoing investments aimed at enhancing capacity, modern manufacturing processes, and digital innovations.
The float-out signifies that the structural phase of the vessel is nearly finished, allowing the focus to shift towards the installation and commissioning of onboard systems. Upon completion, Viking Libra is poised to set a new benchmark in passenger ship technology as the first vessel of its kind to implement hydrogen-based propulsion on a large scale.
