Significant Growth in Passenger and Cargo Traffic at Las Palmas Ports
The port system governed by the Port Authority of Las Palmas reported strong growth in early 2026, showing increased passenger and cargo movements across its ports.
In the January to February period, the port authority noted 888,378 passengers, an increase of 102,614 compared to the prior year, marking a 13.06% growth. Cruise traffic played a pivotal role, making up a significant portion of this influx with 710,072 cruise passengers—an 18.31% rise from 2025.
The port authority highlighted that February figures confirmed a robust start to 2026, especially in passenger traffic and cruise operations, which appeared to be on solid ground. Additionally, the rise in overall traffic and cargo volumes underscored the resilience of the port system, reaffirming its critical role in supporting economic activity and connectivity for the Canary Islands.
The total traffic handled reached 5,655,540 tonnes in the first two months, up 4.67% from 2025. Within this context, cargo contributed the largest share at 5,152,884 tonnes, reflecting a 4.25% increase.
The Port of Las Palmas, the most active facility in the system, accounted for 4,902,414 tonnes of traffic, a 5.36% increase year-on-year. Passenger movements through this port also surged to 503,623, which is 16.22% higher than the previous year.
Cruise tourism emerged as the fastest-growing segment, with traffic rising by 28.37%. This trend solidifies the position of the Port of Las Palmas as a key maritime tourism gateway in the region and a vital link within Atlantic cruise itineraries.
The noteworthy performance in both passenger and cargo sectors illustrates the diverse operations of the port authority, encompassing commercial shipping, cruise activities, and regional connectivity within the Canary Islands and the greater Atlantic area.
