S.S. Emilie: Uniworld’s Newest Riverboat Christened in Amsterdam
Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has officially launched its newest riverboat, the S.S. Emilie, in a ceremony held in Amsterdam. This event marks the ship’s introduction to Uniworld’s "Super Ship" series, expanding the company’s fleet of river cruises.
The christening ceremony featured the traditional breaking of a Champagne bottle against the ship’s bow, a symbolic act meant to ensure good fortune and safe travels for the vessel and its passengers. Ellen Bettridge, Uniworld’s President and CEO, officiated the ceremony alongside the ship’s godmother, Julie Higgins, who has over 20 years of experience with the company, moving from a cabin stewardess role to her current position as the global sustainability officer.
Following the event, the S.S. Emilie commenced its inaugural journey from Amsterdam to Antwerp, embarking on an 8-day "Tulips and Windmills" itinerary, which showcases Uniworld’s hallmark excursions and onboard services.
The design of the S.S. Emilie is influenced by the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, and it is named after Emilie Flöge, Klimt’s life partner and muse. The interior of the ship reflects Klimt’s artistic style with vibrant colors, Art Nouveau elements, and gold accents, highlighted by a prominent portrait of Flöge in the central atrium.
Accommodations include a variety of riverview staterooms and suites equipped with modern conveniences. The ship can host about 154 guests and is designed to navigate European waterways such as the Rhine, Main, and Danube, enhancing Uniworld’s offerings as it develops its next generation of vessels.
